Minecraft Game ModdingTake control of your future! To meet their visions of success as adults in the 21st century, our students are going to need some pretty sophisticated skills. We are not referring to skills such as those needed to play with their iPhones, iPad and iPod games. Students require higher levels of technology education to succeed in the new, knowledge-based economy. This program instills creativity, innovation and sets the students on the path of AP Computer Science pursuits to choose STEM careers. Please see schedule below for more details.

Program Summary

Students become better crafters and gain valuable Java™ programming skills when they learn how to build personalized Minecraft™ game mods. In this dynamic course, students work with Minecraft’s source code to create new types of blocks, ores and items within the game.

1) Students learn to create Technology by learning to design, develop and create meaningful Technology projects in a fun interactive setting using easy to learn programming languages.

2) You've played the internet phenomenon Minecraft, now code in it! Students take their Minecraft game passion to the next level. Students learn programming aspects of Minecraft game and learn how to do game modding & Java coding.

3) Students brush up their Minecraft creation skills, then dive into making their own mods while programming in Java.

4) Create your own blocks, program your own recipes, make your own custom armor set and more!

5) Playtest your modifications with your fellow classmates

Students apply computational, mathematical and logical skills learned to bring their own imaginations to life. Emphasis on "creating" technology rather than just "using" technology, forms the theme of this program. As students work on technology projects, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively in a team setting. Students explore and create projects that include elements of their favorite animation characters, movements, music and dance.
Through interactive projects, personal creations, and step-by-step clear instructions, this program sets the stage for a life-long understanding of everything technology. This program is designed to develop logical thinking and reasoning abilities while also helping students to apply mathematical and scientific concepts to solve real-life problems creatively.

Who should join this program ?
This course has no prerequisites. The curriculum for this program is customized for learners in grades 6, 7 & 8 (ages 10-14) and delivered in small student groups. Learn with individually tailored lessons and make every idea of yours (big or small) count! Students will be placed in age appropriate sessions.

Location
This course is conducted as after-school program at your student's middle school in the Chicago-land area. Weekend programs are conducted at our academy at 4260 Westbrook Dr Suite 109, Aurora IL 60504. Please see schedule below for more details.

Tuition
Course fee - $100/month. One time Technology fee of $25.00 applies. Online payment would allow you to make payment towards tuition for first month + Technology fees. $100 tuition for second, third and fourth month of the program are due 1st of those months via a check payment in favor of "HoneZone". For every registration, HoneZone Technology Academy would donate 5% to the respective School's STEM fund.

Why Game modding & Java coding?
STEM early - Game modding & Java coding program is designed to offer head-start for students in a key 21st century skill - Technology. Giving students an introduction to technology helps peel back the layers of what happens inside computers, tablets, phones and how they communicate with one another using internet and other wireless technologies. Programming knowledge, even at a very basic level, makes technology seem less magical and more manageable. Programming also teaches other important skills, including real world application of math and logic.
We make technology fun for students by helping them use their creativity to design and build on their own ideas, while learning a very important skill. Every idea big or small, helps them apply math, problem solving and logical reasoning skills. Every student combines their power of creativity and solves problems logically and feels mighty strong having learned a life-long skill.

Our Personalized Instruction Promise
Our innovative curriculum is premised on a blended learning strategy. Students receive blended (or hybrid) instruction with live 1-on-1 instruction from our team of educators. Small class sizes allow students to move along at an appropriate, customized pace. Students spend an hour every week in session, but there is also plenty of opportunities to continue creating technology at their own leisure to give students a fun, well-balanced learning experience.

My son/daughter work their iPhone, iPad with ease, don't they already know Technology?
While students work their iPhone, iPad, iPod and Games apps easily, the key to their success is to understand the inner workings of the technology involved in creating those apps and games. At HoneZone, they will learn to "create" those games and apps, rather than just "use" them. It is the practical application of those ideas and the creative thinking required to solve real-world problems, that forms the basis of a truly engaging learning experience.

My son/daughter is not interested in computers as a career. How is this program useful for my student?
Technology is pervasive in almost every aspect of daily life, and as the workplace changes, STEM knowledge and skills grow in importance for a variety of workers beyond STEM careers. Studies have found that demand for STEM-capable workers have increased in traditionally non-STEM fields due to diffusion of technology across industries and occupations. Improving access to quality STEM education will strengthen the caliber of the student even if they want to pursue a non-STEM career. STEM knowledge extends beyond a career, it is a knowlege for life.

What is STEM?
The acronym STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Why STEM?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, in the next five years, STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as quickly as jobs in other fields. While all jobs are expected to grow by 10.4%, STEM jobs are expected to increase by 21.4%. Similarly, 80% of jobs in the next decade will require technical skills. We need to prepare our students to be able to compete in a knowledge-based global economy. Students need 21st Century skills of adaptability, complex communication, social skills, non-routine problem solving, self-management, self-development, and systems thinking. Our students will be called upon to be innovative and creative problem solvers, designers, developers, and inventors.

Why STEM early?
Consider this statistics from Nation center for education statistics: Of the 3.8 million 9th graders in the US, only 233,000 end up choosing a STEM degree in college (National Center for Education Statistics). That means only six STEM graduates out of every 100 9th graders. While all jobs are expected to grow by 10.4%, STEM jobs are expected to increase by 21.4%.
